Designer - any level (no, really).
Salary: Based on experience, skills and potential.
Job type: Full-time.
Location: Theale, Reading, UK.
Apply nowDesigner - any level (no, really).
We'll skip the corporate waffle: we don’t know exactly what we’re looking for. You might be a wide-eyed junior bursting with enthusiasm, potential, and a few projects under your belt. Or a seasoned senior who can swagger in, put your feet up and own a project from day one, blindfolded (please don’t). What we do know is the skills we value, the kind of work we do, and the type of human we want to work with.
The inconvenient truth
As you’ll already know, design isn’t one-size-fits-all.
We’re an evolving team, we don’t go hard on titles and levels, but we do have structure, and we have a pool of skills that we now want to grow.
We have a rapidly expanding schedule of clients and work, that’s pushing the team to its limits (honestly, the moaning). So we need to ease that pressure.
That said, we’re seeing this more of as an exciting opportunity for us to find you. With all your skills, experience, ideas and ideally, smart one-liners and weekly doughnuts – to really build our team into something (even more) special.
Some days you’ll be expertly crafting a slick brand strategy or designing a banging website, others you’ll be swearing at a PowerPoint deck, while you slowly turn it into something that doesn’t make people cry. If you’ve got the humility and the skill to do all that, and do a proper job, well then you’ll fit right in.
You get excited about kerning and quietly judge restaurant menus, you have an allergy to stock photography, and bore friends and family with how you know the name of that typeface on that billboard.
You know when to use AI tools and when to rely on actual human thinking. You can spot bad typography on the side of a moving bus, and crucially, you know that design isn’t “making things pop,” it’s making things work.
Above all: you’re nice, not beige, not a pushover, and goddammit, you know your sh!t.
The kind of person other people actually want to work with.
The role (if we must define it)
- Lead or support branding and website projects (depending on your level).
- Turn sometimes vague client briefs into bold, workable ideas that make them sit up and say, “I never thought of that.”
- Design everything from logos and brand systems to digital products and content workflows.
- Design better websites that don’t just look slick but actually do stuff, beautifully.
- Turn content chaos into clarity and elegance.
- Bring motion, animation, illustration, or video skills to the table (bonus points if you do).
- Occasionally format a Microsoft document like it matters (because, sadly, sometimes it does).
- Use AI wisely; as a tool, not a crutch, knowing the difference between a shortcut and a cop-out.
- QA with the same love that was given to the first draft, like you care. Because you should.
- Treat every task, from the smallest to the biggest, with the same commitment and level of thought that makes it the best it can be.
What we’re looking for
(not a checklist, but the more the better)
- Solid digital design foundation (UX/UI fundamentals, responsive design, prototyping).
- Graphic design fundamentals (space, layout, contrast, proportion, typography – the works).
- A Figma pro – we use Figma, you need to know it, well. That includes auto-layout, components, variables, prototyping etc. Adobe Creative Suite fluent. Office 365 competent (yes, that includes PowerPoint).
- Branding and identity chops – from strategy and identity through to logos and design systems.
- Typography skills that make people stop and stare (in a good way).
- Experience with animation/motion/video/3D – any of these is a big shiny cherry on top.
- Comfortable with process, QA, and workflow, not allergic to the details, and not just in it for the fun bits.
- Able to communicate your ideas and explain your work to real people with design, words, and your actual voice.
- A portfolio that makes us say “wow”, not “hmm,” tells us what you did, where you added value, and that shows actual problem-solving, not just pretty mockups and pictures.
Who you are
- Creative, bold, creatively-bold, curious and not afraid to be a bit weird.
- Wants to make remarkable, out-there, award-winning creative that feels different.
- Humble, ego-free, but confident in your skills.
- Open, collaborative, easy to work with, not a lone wolf.
- Solid work ethic; Up for hard work and good fun.
- You can name at least 5 non-system typefaces off the top of your head.
- A dreamer who knows how (and when) to do the doing.
- Someone who says “why not?” more than “why?”
- You know that design is about solving problems, not just decorating them.
- Understands development, what’s possible, what’s not, and what might be.
- Willing to work deeply with developers while pushing them into unfamiliar, uncharted, exciting, and creatively bold directions.
- The kind of person people want on their team when deadlines get tough.
- Put simply, we need someone who gives a sh!t about what they (and we) are here to do.
The practical stuff
- Hybrid role: 3 days in the office, 2 from home.
- Location: Our studio is 5 minutes from Theale station (direct trains to London), right by J12 of the M4. Leafy, connected, not remote.
- Please only apply if you can realistically commute three days a week.
- You must send us a portfolio. No portfolio = no dice.
What’s in it for you?
- A team that genuinely values high quality and good design (and good humans).
- A mix of serious projects, creative freedom, technical learning, and personal growth.
- The chance to genuinely contribute to and influence the direction of an exciting, evolving team, and agency.
- Holidays and all that stuff, and a culture that remembers you have a life.
- A place where good ideas matter more than job titles.
- Work you’ll actually be proud to put your name on.
Apply if…
You’re a designer who can think and a thinker who can design.
You’re excited by the messy bits of design as much as the shiny end product.
You’re talented, humble, and want to make brands better, bolder, and braver.
Primary CTA:
Send us your CV, but, more importantly, a portfolio that shows who you are and what you can really do.
We’ve got some well-judged whitespace in our team; we’re not looking to fill it, but to find the right designer who makes the whole layout work better.
If that’s you, we want to hear from you.
What’s it like working at Rouge?
Rouge Media is a digital design and development agency. We have a full range of clients from start-ups to large corporates. We deliver and support WordPress marketing sites, powerful web applications and everything in between. This breadth and range keeps us stable and secure as a business, and the variety keeps day-to-day work exciting and varied.
All our designers and developers work closely as a team. Problems get solved together. We spend time working on our own, but never in isolation.
One of the founding philosophies of the business was to protect a work-life balance. We believe that staying late, night after night, doesn’t mean more work gets done. So we try not to do it. We work hard, but we work efficiently.
We are easy to get to and well connected despite working in a village. We are right by Junction 12 of the M4. Rouge is 5 minutes walk from Theale train station, with direct trains to London Paddington.
