Rouge are always keeping an eye on the trends in web design (as well as riding the leading edge of course), so when we saw this post we thought we’d share it and give you our thoughts at the same time.
The first thing of which there is no doubt is that things are changing and are never likely to stop, perhaps the biggest driver here being the fact that more and more people are viewing the web on mobile devices. This means that every site has to be designed to be visually effective on these smaller screens, as well as being easy to navigate and fast to load, a mix that makes getting it right quite a tall order.
The first of the changes prophesied is that GIF’s may be making a comeback, at least in their animated form. This is quite a novel idea, as GIF’s are vector format images (you don’t download a picture with GIF’s just the instructions to ‘draw’ them) and are thus much smaller than videos, something that makes for a faster web experience. This is of course great news for mobile users.
The use of squares, oblongs and other geometric shapes also looks interesting, the idea it seems stemming from Google’s material design. Cleverly used, this design methodology looks anything but flat, and we have been using it to some degree already, so it will be interesting to see how this one catches on with other designers.
Making it Pop, as they suggest is not really new in our view, at Rouge we have always aimed to do this, it being so necessary to make our customers websites stand out amongst the crowd. This idea it seems is based on the use of bold typography, again something that we agree wholeheartedly with.
Overall then, the changes to 2017 are mostly already being used by Rouge, but we are sure that there will be more to come next year.

Inspired by Google’s material design – which is basically adding depth, boldness, and movement to geometric shapes and lines – the future of web design certainly looks anything but flat. Just because it’s a square doesn’t mean that’s all it is. One of the Material Design’s principles is using basic shapes as a metaphor. Thus, something so simple can in fact, mean a lot.
Stripe embodies this concept marvelously in their web design. Using a combination of beautiful gradients and simple geometric shapes with shadows, they create a pleasing platform for users to explore. This simply style certainly holds plenty of promise for the future of web design.
3) The Future of Web Design: Make It Pop
If minimalist was the trend in 2015 and 2016, 2017 is sure to see more colors.
Already, web designers are making a statement with unique typography and bold HD images. Combined with hand-drawn elements, this is meant to create a personalized feel. After all, with competition heating up every year, no one wants to be like everyone else.
If you can upload your own bold typography, the better. As long as it’s readable and reflects your brand’s objectives, it should be alright for debut. Avoid using stock images whenever you can once 2017 hits. With camera phones and smart photo-editing apps, you can take pictures like a pro. Use every opportunity as a photo op. Store the good ones in a database for easy access anytime.
